A Local's Honest Favorites
One of the most common questions I'm asked during beach session isn't about photography.
It's about food.
Where should we eat around here? What's actually good? Do they take reservations?
If you're visiting Destin or Okaloosa Island, these are places I confidently recommend to my clients. No tourist traps here.
If you want something truly local, start with Harbor Docks.
A true local staple. Family owned, deep rooted in Destin's fishing community, and known for incredibly fresh seafood. They operate their own commercial fishing boats, which says everything about their Gulf to Table quality. It's relaxed, authentic and consistently excellent. Love the harbor sunset views, vibes and their variety of menu options.
If you're staying on or near Okaloosa Island and want outdoor dining right on the water, check out The Gulf.
It sits directly on the Choctawatchee Bay and has such a distinct atmosphere. The space is built from reclaimed shipping containers and natural materials, which gives it a distinctive look. It's open air, right on the water and especially beautiful in the evening light. Great for families who want something coastal and laid back. Their menu shifts seasonally, utilizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
If you're planning a nicer dinner one evening, I recommend Marina Cafe.
Overlooking the harbor, it's a beautiful sunset spot with a more refined feel. I appreciate that they accept reservations, especially during peak season. The atmosphere is polished without being stiff and it's a wonderful option for date night or a slower paced evening.
Local Market is a great breakfast/lunch stop. It's owned by the same family behind Harbor Docks, and you can feel that same commitment to quality. They have a large room with several pinball machines and a small local goods store. Awesome spot for families.
If you want something lively with character, McGuire's Irish Pub is a Destin classic. It's energetic, fun and has been part of the area for decades. Great food, big portions and an experience in itself. They have a sushi side, a pizza side and then the Irish pub in the middle. So no matter what you're in the mood for, you're covered!
There are plenty of places to dine along the coast. The difference is knowing which ones are worth your time. These are restaurants I confidently recommend to clients because they reflect the same intention and quality I value in my own work. Good food. Thoughtful atmosphere. A place you leave feeling gald you chose it.
