Most Families Start by Choosing Sunset

When families inquire about beach photos in Destin, sunset is usually the first thing they picture.

And honestly, I understand why. The sun is lower in the sky, dinner plans fit naturally afterward, and nobody has to set an alarm while on vacation. Sunset sessions have become the traditional choice for beach photography and they remain incredibly popular for good reason. But after 10 years of photographing families in this area, I’ve learned that there isn’t one “best” option for everyone.

Why I Love Sunset Sessions

Sunset sessions create a relaxed end to the day. Families have time to enjoy the beach, finish activities, and ease into their session without feeling rushed. The light during the final hour before sunset can be beautiful, especially when conditions cooperate. For many families with older children, sunset is the obvious choice.

Why Sunrise Deserves More Credit

Sunrise sessions are often overlooked, but they come with several advantages. The beaches are quieter, temperatures are cooler, the light is incredibly soft. And most importantly, the weather is often calmer than it will be later in the day. Many parents are surprised to discover that younger children sometimes perform better at sunrise than they do after a long day in the sun, pool, and heat. My sunrise sessions feel peaceful, relaxed, and almost private compared to a busier evening on the beach.

Sometimes We Don't Actually Get to Choose

This is the part most visitors don't realize. Florida weather has a mind of its own.

While many families prefer sunset, weather patterns sometimes make sunrise the better option.

Afternoon storms, persistent cloud cover, strong winds, or shifting forecasts can occasionally force us to pivot. When that happens, having sunrise availability somewhere within your vacation week can make all the difference.

Nobody loves the idea of setting an early alarm while on vacation. I get it. But sometimes flexibility allows us to save a session that otherwise might not happen at all.

My Honest Recommendation

If your schedule allows for flexibility, keep both sunrise and sunset possibilities open until we get closer to your session date. Sometimes sunset ends up being perfect. Sometimes sunrise becomes the better choice. And sometimes the weather makes the decision for us.

Flexibility usually leads to the best outcomes.

The goal isn't choosing the perfect time months or weeks in advance. The goal is creating beautiful photographs while making the most of the conditions we're given.
